Haywood Bows Out With Top 6

Grand Am Notes

By Gene Bishop

TOOELE, Utah — Hurley Haywood ended his career as a Rolex Series regular with a sixth-place finish in the Sunchaser 1000. The 60-year-old Jacksonville, Fla. veteran was joined by J.C. France and Terry Borcheller in the No. 59 Brumos Porsche Riley — painted in the white, blue and red colors that Haywood has raced for more than 35 years. It was the car’s best finish since placing fifth at Homestead-Miami Speedway early in the season.
The five-time winner of the Rolex 24 at Daytona will continue to drive for the team in endurance events, including Daytona, Watkins Glen and Salt Lake City.
Haywood’s Brumos Racing teammate Darren Law pitched in to help Doncaster Racing when driver Dave Lacey took ill late in the event. The team finished fifth in GT. Incidentally, Law earned valuable Porsche Cup points in the process. He currently leads the competition for the award for the top independent Porsche driver in international competition with only three races remaining.

The V-8 Porsche engine went the distance in its debut in Rolex Series competition. Doug Goad, Marc-Antoine Camirand and Guy Cosmo finished 15th in the Sunchaser 1000, four laps off the pace.

• Wayne Taylor Racing will switch to the Dallara chassis for the 2008 Miami Grand Prix. Taylor said that his team will race the Pontiac Riley chassis in next year’s season-opening Rolex 24 At Daytona, but will switch to Dallara for the remainder of the campaign.
Dallara prototypes are no strangers to the Rolex Series. Most recently, the Doran Lista Racing Judd Dallara scored the overall victory at the 2002 Rolex 24 At Daytona, and the team also enjoyed success campaigning the Ferrari 333-powered Dallara prototype.
Dallara Automobili Spa of Parma, Italy, announced Friday it purchased Doran’s license to build Daytona Prototypes. Kevin Doran will become the U.S. distributor for spare parts, and the approved repair center for its Daytona Prototypes.

Automatic Racing will step up to the GT class, becoming the first team to campaign the new BMW M6 in 2008. The Orlando, Fla.-based team will continue to field four entries in the Koni Challenge Series. Making the announcement were team principles David Russell, Jep Thornton and team manager Joe Varde. Riley Technologies will provide a turnkey M6, with the team taking an option on a second chassis. Automatic debuted in the Koni Challenge in 2002 with a BMW M3, and expanded to four cars in 2006.
