ALTON, Va. — Canadian Kuno Wittmer watched the competition fall off the course in front of him and held off the attacks of others to record his first win in SCCA Pro Racing Speed World Challenge Touring Car competition Saturday at Virginia Int’l Raceway.
Wittmer’s .090-second victory was the fifth-closest finish in series history. BimmerWorld BMW teammates Seth Thomas and James Clay completed the podium.
Thomas had a run on Wittmer off the final turn of VIR’s 3.27-mile, 17-turn circuit, but was unable to close the distance on Wittmer’s Acura TSX.
“It feels absolutely fantastic to win, especially with the way the race unfolded,” Wittmer, whose previous best finish was second place, said. “I had a great start and was right behind Chip (Herr) off the start.”
The finish:
Kuno Wittmer, Seth Thomas, James Clay, Charles Espenlaub, Chip Herr, Peter Cunningham, Pierre Kleinubing, Jeff Altenburg, Payton Wilson, Eric Curran, Jason Saini, Michael Galati, Jason Martinelli, Nick Esayian, Charlie Putman, Patrick Lindsey, Glenn Bocchino.
