Johnson Crowned In Gulf; Dover Earns First Victory

BEAUMONT, Texas — The American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region kicked off the season with Jason Johnson wiring the field in Friday night’s 25-lap Prelude to the Gulf Coast Nationals feature at Golden Triangle Raceway Park.
The winner of East Bay Raceway Park’s King of the 360’s Nationals at the outset of the month pocketed another $2,000 on Friday night by winning the 100th event in ASCS Gulf South Region history.
Piloting Marvin Pearson’s Wesmar-powered Custom Equipment Design No. 11 Eagle, Johnson escaped a wild opening lap skirmish that eliminated a handful of cars and then led all the way to record his 14th career ASCS Gulf South win.
Greg Rilat held down the runner-up position throughout, with ninth-starter Chris Sweeney taking third. Garry Lee Maier charged from 16th to snare fourth, with defending series champion Brandon Berryman fifth.

BAYTOWN, Texas — Opportunity knocked in Houston Raceway Park’s inaugural Gulf Coast Nationals and Jack Dover took full advantage to collect the $3,000 winner’s share in Saturday night’s 30-lap American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region feature.
The 18-year-old found himself back on the point when Garry Lee Maier and Jason Johnson tangled while dicing for the lead, and led the rest of the way to secure the victory aboard Marc & Lori Dover’s Eckley-powered 3d Auto Transport No. 53 Eagle.
It was Dover’s first Gulf South Regional score in front of a closing Jimmy Brooks, with 10-starter Travis Rilat third.
