July 3

BECHTELSVILLE, Pa. — Todd Shaffer ended an 18-year drought at Grandview Speedway, winning round three of Pennsylvania Speedweek as the NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series presented its 27th feature in 18 years July 3.
Shaffer, who had won the first Thunder on the Hill event, returned to victory lane, wheeling Gary and Patty Beam's No. 88 to the $5,000 triumph after 35 laps on the tricky third-mile dirt track.
Chad Layton led early, with Doug Esh taking the point on lap six. Layton was back out front a lap later. Shaffer closed in and went to the front on lap 11.
In the closing stages, Lucas Wolfe caught and passed Layton for the second and began to reel in the leader. With just two laps to go, Fred Rahmer spun while exiting turn four, displaying the final caution of the race.
Shaffer held off Wolfe for the victory, with Lance Dewease, Greg Hodnett and Layton following.

July 4

HAGERSTOWN, Md. — With the top-six qualifiers inverted, Lance Dewease started on the pole and led all 30 laps of the July 4 Pennsylvania Sprint Speedweek event at Hagerstown Speedway.
Dewease beat Lucas Wolfe to the checkered flag by five car lengths to bank the $5,000 payday.
“My dad (Stuart) passed away two months ago, and we’ve been trying like the devil to win one, so this one is for my dad,” Dewease said. “The last two months are probably the worst of my racing career. There’ve been a lot of issues. I had the birth of my son, which was a lovely thing in my life, and lost my father, which was the worst thing in my life, so in two months, I had the high and low of life. He loved racing. He ran late models here. I grew up playing in those stones right there. This place means a lot to me, and we enjoy winning here.”
Wolfe finished second, with Stevie Smith, Fred Rahmer and Greg Hodnett rounding out the top five.
Brian Leppo was the fast qualifier for the 33-car field.

Friday

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. — Friday was a good night for Greg Hodnett at Williams Grove Speedway.
He left tied for first place in the Pennsylvania Speedweek standings.
He moved from fourth place to the lead in the Cindy Rowe Auto Glass point race for the track championship. And he won the 30-lap Bobby Rahal Toyota-sponsored Mitch Smith Memorial, which was worth $10,000.
Sean Michael took the lead at the start, but Lucas Wolfe drove by on lap two and began to pull away.
A caution flag on lap 14 closed the field, with Hodnett, who started fourth, trailing Wolfe and Michael.
Hodnett used the restart to test the inside and immediately passed Michael to take the runner-up spot. Within two laps he had caught the leader.
With Wolfe’s car a bit loose exiting turn two, Hodnett drove into the lead on lap 19. Wolfe refused to concede, however, and stayed within striking distance, but had to settle for second. T.J. Stutts passed Michael on lap 21 and finished fourth. Jeff Shepard completed the top five.
