Meyers Continues His Late Roll
NOBODY'S HOTTER: Jason Meyers (14) and Bud Kaeding (20) race for position during the 14th annual Trophy Cup Saturday night at Tulare Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif.
TULARE, Calif. — Though he didn’t win a feature Friday or Saturday night, Jason Meyers continued his late-season hot streak by using consistent finishes to win the Trophy Cup at Tulare Thunderbowl Raceway.
Meyers charged from 20th to finish third on the third-mile oval Saturday night, giving him the most points during the two nights of racing.
It was the fourth straight weekend Meyers has won a prominent sprint-car feature.
Joey Saldana won the Friday night feature, but was disqualified from his heat on Saturday after he failed to stop at the scales. Thus, he started the feature 16th. He made his way to fourth in the race, but finished second to Meyers in the overall Trophy Cup standings.
“This is just awesome,” said Meyers, who earned $15,000 for the victory. “The guys gave me a great car and I’m so happy to finally get a Trophy Cup.”
While Meyers was the overall winner, Randy Hannagan topped Saturday night’s 40-lap feature, taking the lead from Jonathan Allard on a lap-26 restart.
“I have to thank Walt Bronco and the crew for a great race car tonight,” Hannagan said. “We had Brian Sperry helping out this weekend and that’s always a good thing. The Trophy Cup is nostalgia and this race means a lot to me.”
Brent Kaeding finished second in Saturday night’s feature, with Meyers and Saldana following.
Tyler Walker, who qualified for the A main, suffered a possible broken arm during a heat race incident and was unable to start the feature.
