BRISBANE, Australia — Donny Schatz topped Daryn Pittman to win the final round of the 2007-08 Wanless World Series Sprintcars championship Saturday at Brisbane Int’l Speedway.
The current World of Outlaws champion stayed the 50-lap final round from the ninth starting spot and quickly moved forward to fifth when championship contender Max Dumesny flipped to bring out the first caution flag on lap six.
Following the restart, Schatz continued to make his way toward the front of the field, moving into second place behind Pittman on lap 10.
Schatz dogged Pittman for the next six laps before pulling alongside in a bid for the lead. The pair ran side by side for a lap-and-a-half before Schatz inched ahead to take over the top spot and was never headed from there, cruising toward his first victory of the season. Pittman came home second, with Andrew Scheuerle third and Danny Reidy fourth.
Brooke Tatnell finished fifth and wrapped up his sixth Wanless World Series Sprintcars championship, easily beating out Robbie Farr and Dumesny, who both crashed out early in the event.
The finish:
Donny Schatz, Daryn Pittman, Andrew Scheuerle, Danny Reidy, Brooke Tatnell, David Murcott, Peter Thorley, Mike Carber, Cameron Gessner, Robbie Farr, Trevor Green, Todd Wanless, David Muir, Tony Wynne, Richard Morgan, Max Dumesny, Ricky Maiolo, James McFadden.
