CHICO, Calif. — Tim Kaeding picked up $5,000 for winning the Pacific Sprint Nationals Saturday night at Silver Dollar Speedway. All Shane Stewart got was a headache.
Stewart held the lead in the 40-lap event as the pair took the white flag on the quarter-mile oval. Stewart drifted off the track exiting turn two and Kaeding dashed to the inside. Stewart returned to the track and the pair battled side by side through turn three.
Halfway through the turn, Kaeding and Stewart banged wheels. Stewart spun and Kaeding blasted under the checkered flag.
As Kaeding did victory donuts, Stewart sat helplessly in turn four. He was officially scored in 17th.
“This one is for my grandma who I love and will miss,” said Kaeding, whose grandma died the previous day. “Tonight we showed why sprint-car racing is the best sport in the world.”
With Stewart out of the race, Colby Weisz finished second.
“Losing to TK at Chico is not a bad deal,” said Weisz. “The last few laps got a little hairy, we were running around the top and it was such a fine line.
“It was actually a lot of fun tonight.”
Andy Forsberg, Bud Kaeding and Jonathan Allard rounded out the top five.
The finish:
Tim Kaeding, Colby Wiesz, Andy Forsberg, Bud Kaeding, Jonathan Allard, Brad Furr, Stephen Allard, Jimmy Trulli, Kyle Larson, Mark Hall, Mason Moore, Dan Menne, Brett Rollag, Billy Wallace, Chuck Gurney, Jr., Greg DeCaires, Shane Stewart, Scott Kinney, Andy Gregg, Brett Miller, Kyle Hirst, Joey Magaruh, James Sweeney, Richard Bailey.
