WEST ALLIS, Wis. — Kyle Busch made the right changes at the halfway break to come back and win Sunday’s Wisconsin All-Star 100 over Matt Kenseth at The Milwaukee Mile.
This was Busch’s second win in the American Speed Ass’n Midwest Tour.
“It was a fun race today, had a great time racing with these guys, always do,” Busch stated in victory lane. “Finally, we were able to close the deal today. We kind of struggled a little bit this year in our short-track effort. We were fast at Iowa and had a tire go down, and we were fast here. Luckily, our luck stayed with us here today and we were able to come out of here with a win.”
Busch, the fastest qualifier with a time of 29.110 seconds (123.669 mph), started 11th after the invert and quickly charged to the front with Kenseth right behind him.
Kenseth caught up to Busch’s bumper on lap 36 and followed him through traffic. On lap 44, Kenseth went on the outside of Busch coming out of turn four and made his pass for the lead down the frontstretch. The crowd of over 18,000 rose to their feet as Kenseth, a Wisconsin native, came by a lap later as the new leader of the race. He held the top spot through the halfway break.
But Busch wasted no time regaining the lead, passing Kenseth for the point two laps into the second half of the race. He held on from there for a 1.673-second victory over second-place Chris Wimmer, who had worked his way by Kenseth on lap 57.
Kenseth settled for third with Mark Kraus and Dean Cornelious rounding out the top five.
