OK Trip: Teammates Top Fall Nationals

USMTS

Saturday
BEAUMONT, Texas — USMTS Southern Series teammates Jason Hughes and Tommy Weder rode into town Thursday for the inaugural Texas Fall Nationals at the Motorama Speedway, and like Old West bandits, they headed back to Oklahoma with a bulk of the prize money.
Needing just three laps from his third row starting spot, Hughes powered to the front and led the final 47 circuits Saturday night to capture the championship finale and the $3,000 that went with it. Weder, who won Friday night's main event with Hughes in tow, finished second to Hughes on in the last main after starting 13th and stashed away $2,000 in the process. Over the three nights of racing, the Hughes and Weder earned a combined $8,700.
From the outside of the front row, fellow Sooner State ace Greg Skaggs took the lead at the drop of the green flag from pole sitter Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, but his reign was short-lived as Hughes took command on lap 4 and never looked back. John O. Whittington of Vidor, Texas, grabbed a third-place paycheck, while Shryock wound up in fourth for the third straight night. Randy Timms of Wheatland, Okla., rounded out the top-5 finishers.

The finish:
Jason Hughes, Tommy Weder, Jr., John O. Whittington, Kelly Shryock, Randy Timms, Greg Skaggs, Steve Miller, Steve Holzkamper, Howard Willis, Paul White, Tracy Denby, Jamie Burford, Phil Dixon, Shane Hebert, Steve Pugh, Scott Green, Dena Wilson, Jeff Wood, Derek Ramirez, David Horner, Derek Knowles, Nicholas Littlejohn, Brandon Kenny, Larry Clevenger.

Friday
BEAUMONT, Texas — It took 111 tries before Tommy Weder Jr. finally got his first USMTS-sanctioned victory two weeks ago. It took him just three races to win his second.
Friday night at the Motorama Speedway, the 22-year-old captured his second USMTS Southern Series feature in the last four events as he topped the second night of the inaugural Texas Fall Nationals. The win was worth $2,000.
Weder's teammate, Jason Hughes grabbed the runner-up finish after racing from 11th on the 24-car starting grid. Thursday's winner, Steve Holzkamper started third and finished third Friday night.
USMTS Southern Series point leader Kelly Shryock pocketed a fourth-place paycheck for the second straight night. Shryock, who started 14th, charged through the field with 15th-starting John O. Whittington following him to a fifth-place finish. While both drivers passed 10 cars, Shryock earned the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors with his higher finish.
