MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — It’s safe to say Trevor Bayne is pretty good at green-white-checkered finishes.
After going from fifth to second in the final two laps at Iowa Speedway, Bayne went from fourth to first in the final two laps at Myrtle Beach Speedway to win the Mark Brooks Memorial Bi-Lo 250 presented by Black’s Tire and Auto Service.
“These green-white-checkers have been good to me,” said Bayne, driver of the No. 29s Aaron’s/DEI Chevrolet. “I was kind of worried, though. There were two guys [Ben Stancill and Mike Garvey] that had brand new tires on. Keith [Hinkein], my crew chief, told me to stay calm and we could do it.”
Bayne did it, but he wasn’t exactly calm.
Bayne split Garvey and Frank to take third right after the restart and bounced his way past Stancill on the final lap to take his second victory of the season.
“We went three-wide for second and caught the No. 9 car for the lead,” said Bayne. “We made a clean pass for the win. Overall, it was a real clean race tonight.”
Stancill, driver of the No. 9n Stancill Farms Ford, probably wishes it would have been a little cleaner. Stancill was pulling away toward his first Pro Cup victory when Mark McFarland brought out the final caution of the night and set up the two-lap dash for the win.
“If that caution wouldn’t have come out with five to go, we would have won the race,” said Stancill, who finished second. “If we would have been better on sticker tires, we would’ve won, too. But I’m happy with second.”
Mike Garvey, driver of the No. 17 JaniKing Ford, came home third, but he wasn’t exactly thrilled.
“Those last few laps were ridiculous,” said Garvey. “Trevor could’ve wrecked us all with a move like that. I don’t like people blasting off everyone like that. But he won.”
A.J. Frank and Richard Boswell rounded out the top five.
The finish:
Point-leader Bobby Gill finished 11th and leads Bayne by only 15 points. Gary St. Amant entered the race second in the standings, but finished 31st.
