SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. — Jerry Coons, Jr. found victory lane Saturday night at Angell Park Speedway by capturing the 30-lap National Midget Hall of Fame Classic.
The event was co-sanctioned by the USAC National and Badger Midget Car Series. The victory also extended Coons’s USAC point lead and was his fourth feature victory of the season at the track.
Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. stalled on the opening lap of the feature and restarted in last position. On the restart, Dan Mecum flipped escaping injury.
Once underway, Dave Darland, running the cushion on an extremely fast multi-grove track, held a comfortable margin over the field. Coons made his move starting on lap nine when he took third. Two laps later, Coons assumed second and began erasing Darland’s 1.4-second lead. Darland began lapping slower cars on lap 13, with Coons closing to Darland’s bumper.
Coons drew even with Darland and was scored the leader as the pair crossed the start/finish line at the midway point. Stenhouse entered the top 10 on the same lap.
Brad Loyet escaped injury when he flipped on lap 18. On the restart, Coons drove away from Darland, finishing 1.94 seconds ahead at the checkered flag.
Stenhouse rallied to finish third, while Danny Stratton and Chuck Gurney, Jr. rounded out the top five.

Sunday
SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. — New Zealand’s Michael Pickens topped fellow countryman Brad Mosen to win Sunday night’s 30-lap National Midget Hall of Fame Classic at Angell Park Speedway.
The event was co-sanctioned by the USAC National and Badger Midget Car Series.
Pickens jumped into the lead from the pole, followed by Mosen and Danny Stratton. Pickens, running the cushion, began increasing his lead over a tightly bunched field of cars. By lap 10, Pickens held a 1.4-second lead over Mosen. At the midway point, Pickens led by more than three seconds.
Brady Bacon hit the frontstretch wall on lap 17, bringing out the caution flag. On the restart, Pickens took advantage of two lapped cars between himself and Mosen and built a quick lead. A multi-car tangle mid-pack on lap 19 resulted in Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., Davey Ray and Chad DeSelle all flipping in turn three.
Pickens easily pulled away from Mosen on the restart, and the pair separated themselves from the rest of the field.
Positions three through seven changed several times over the remainder of the event. Pickens, driving the Hans Lein Spike/Ford Esslinger No. 2, finished 2.57 seconds ahead of Mosen.
USAC point-leader Jerry Coons, Jr., Badger point-leader Brad Kuhn and fast-qualifier Brad Loyet completed the top five.
