LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. — Dave Darland collected his second USAC Lucas Oil National Sprint Car Series victory in less than a week during the second stop on the Indiana Sprint Week trail Thursday at Lawrenceburg Speedway.
Claiming the lead from Brady Short at the halfway mark, Darland scored a convincing victory, with Short second and Levi Jones third.
Afterwards, Darland noted the cars and drivers from other parts of the country at the race, saying, “It adds a little more flavor to it and makes it a little more exciting. When you win a race with all of that talent here, it feels good.”
Before the field completed the first lap, Wednesday’s winner, Jon Stanbrough, took a tumble in turn three. “I made a mistake and was racing the guy next to me and got into the guy in front of me and turned over,” Stanbrough explained. “I don’t know if it messed up the suspension on the car or not, but the car wasn’t doing anything after that, so I just held on and got what I could get.”
The Fox brothers changed a flat tire ,and Stanbrough was pushed back onto the track. The fast qualifier, Darland’s Pace Brothers Construction Maxim started sixth, as Scotty Weir raced into the lead from the pole. While most of the field was running the lower half of the track, Brady Short moved a lane higher and found grip on the cushion. He passed Levi Jones for second on lap four and grabbed the lead, from Weir on a lap-five restart.
Darland followed Short into second, running low in turn two, while Short stayed in the high groove. Darland grabbed the lead on lap 15. Through the next 15 circuits, Darland built a straightaway lead, as Short held off Jones in a battle for second. Weir was fourth, with Shane Cottle and Cory Kruseman fifth and sixth after starting in the seventh row.
For Darland, following Short to the front on the top and then finding the fast way through turn two was crucial to the victory.
“If I ran the bottom in three and four, I wasn’t fast enough off of that corner to beat him,” he explained. “So, I had to run low off of two and beat him into the cushion into three. That’s how I got him and also Scotty Weir.”
