PHOENIX — Jerry Coons, Jr. earned his second USAC K & N Silver Crown Series victory Saturday night in the 50-lap Copper on Dirt main event presented by Sands Chevrolet at Manzanita Speedway.
Coons started third and took the lead from Bud Kaeding on lap 39 of the half-mile oval. He led the final 12 laps in his Rotondo Weirich Beast-Chevy to beat defending series champion Kaeding to the checkered flag.
Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., who won the inaugural Copper on Dirt Silver Crown race in 2007, finished third. Shane Cottle and Tracy Hines rounded out the top five.
Coons averaged 78.034 miles per hour during the 50-lap race and picked up a check for $10,500. The race was slowed only once, when fast qualifier Jon Stanbrough spun while battling Kaeding for the lead on lap 14.
Stanbrough led the first seven laps, with Kaeding leading lap eight. Stanbrough led again on laps nine through 13, with Kaeding taking over when Stanbrough spun.
