ROSSBURG, Ohio — Dave Darland took advantage of slower cars to capture the K&N USAC Silver Crown 50-lapper Saturday night at Eldora Speedway.
Darland’s victory capped the Chevy American Revolution 28th annual 4-Crown program.
After setting fast qualifying time in his Rotondo Weirich Beast/Toyota, Jerry Coons, Jr. paced the opening 17 laps of the half-mile dirt track.
With Darland just a half-dozen car-lengths behind as they raced into traffic, Coons got stuck behind a slower car in the top groove. Darland seized the opportunity to dive low through the turn, passing both machines and driving away. Continuing to work smoothly through busy knots of cars, he kept anyone from getting close enough to mount a challenge.
“It’s great. It’s as big as they get. It’s a blast to get a win here anytime,” Darland said after wheeling Galen Fox’s Jarvis Enterprises/Plastic Express Beast to his third 4-Crown Nationals Silver Crown victory. “I knew that we were pretty equal. I was just a little bit better. Traffic did help me get by. It worked out great.”
Brian Tyler worked forward steadily from sixth-starting slot after falling a straightaway behind in traffic. He passed Coons on lap 44, but was put back to third when Patrick Bruns climbed the third-turn wall and scraped to a stop in the middle of the banking. Darland had a clear track when they took the green with four lapped cars buffering him from Coons and Tyler. Tyler reclaimed second a lap later, but couldn’t catch Darland.
The victory moved Darland to 20 points behind Coons, the series point leader, as Tyler also gained on the strength of his third-consecutive top-two finish.
Shane Cottle and Levi Jones rounded out the top five.
