McAleer Moves To Grand-Am Challenge Tour
AUSTIN, Texas – C.J. Wilson Racing has signed 2012 SCCA Pro Racing Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup champion Stevan McAleer to compete in the Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Series alongside co-driver Marc Miller in 2013.
The duo will race in the ST class in one of C.J. Wilson Racing’s Mazda MX-5s.
McAleer will take the next step in his professional racing career thanks to the MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development Driver ladder, his MX-5 Cup title enabled him to stay within both the MAZDASPEED and CJ Wilson Racing families and test his skills at the next level of sports car competition.
“Having Stevan grow with the team is really exciting for everyone at CJWR,” said team owner C.J. Wilson “For him to win the championship in an MX-5 and step into our Grand-Am MX-5 means he will hit the ground running and get up to speed quickly. Driver development is integral to the future of our team, and we are putting our full effort into continuing that program with Stevan.”
John Doonan, the Director of Mazda Motorsport, was equally effusive in his praise for the Glasgow born driver.
“Stevan did a great job in the MX-5 Cup and obviously worked well with the CJ Wilson Racing team such that they are sticking together as a team, always a plus,” said Doonan. “Stevan will challenge for race wins and must be viewed as a favorite for rookie of the year honors.”
For the New York based McAleer, this is a chance to further develop the championship winning partnership which was formed with C.J. Wilson Racing in 2012.
“C.J., Jason and the team took a big risk on me in last year and I was thrilled to be able to reward their faith with the MX-5 Cup title,” said McAleer. “There was no question that I was going to use the MAZDASPEED Scholarship prize money to move up to the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge with CJWR”.
