Wilson To Drive In Two Grand-Am Races
PATASKALA, Ohio — Grand-Am team owner Michael Shank announced that Gustavo Yacaman will share the No. 6 Ford-Riley with IZOD IndyCar Series driver Justin Wilson during the final two races of the season.
“I am pretty excited about how the Tuvacol/AERO car is positioned to finish the championship,” said Shank. “Gus continues to convert his raw speed into his racecraft with these Daytona Prototypes, and I think getting guys like Justin and AJ involved with this program is only going to keep the curve going because they’ve both been there, done that. We’ve also been fortunate to have some new support for the whole team from Curb, Roberts Electrical, and AERO. We want to go out and convert that support into results and I think putting the pieces of this puzzle together are good steps for us to go do that.”
Wilson, who opened the 2013 racing season with a podium for Michael Shank Racing at Daytona, returned to the squad in the last round at Watkins Glen. A cagey fuel gamble didn’t pay the hoped-for podium dividends for the team, but the weekend was still highly productive for the entire team as the duo came home sixth.
For Wilson, the return to Rolex Series competition last weekend left the talented Briton looking for more, and the Dale Coyne Racing pilot is hoping to be a part of a strong close to 2013 for Mike Shank.
“It was great to team with Gus (Yacaman) at Watkins Glen and to get back into a Daytona Prototype,” said Wilson. “It has been a long time since I had the chance to race at Road America and Laguna Seca, so I’m really excited about those weekends. I’ve never been to Kansas or Lime Rock, so those will both be new challenges for me and Gus to take on. The Shank guys really do their homework, so hopefully we can be competitive right from the get-go every time out.”
