Another Racer Killed In Macau

HONG KONG — For the second consecutive day, a racer was killed during qualifying drills for the Macau Grand Prix.

Touring car driver Phillip Yau Wing-choi died Friday after crashing on the Mandarin Bend portion of the Guia Circuit when his Chevrolet Cruze slammed into a crash barrier and the car burst into flames. Yau was declared dead 27 minutes after arriving at a local hospital.

The previous day, motorcycle racer Luis Filipe de Sousa Carreira died after crashing during practice.

Despite the fatalities, race organizers believe the course is safe.

“I don’t think there is any question about the track, it has existed as it is for 60 years,” race coordinator Joao Manuel Costa Antunes.
