Silverstone Classic logoTOWCESTER, England – A multi-car crash on the first lap of a Sunday afternoon historic race during the Silverstone Classic killed one driver.

Denis Welch, 69, died after rolling his Lotus 18 during the second Jack Brabham Memorial Trophy event. The crash forced the race to be red-flagged while Welch was transported to a Silverstone hospital, where he passed away.

“It is with great regret that we have to report that Denis Welch succumbed to his injuries in the circuit’s medical center,” said a Silverstone press release.

“The event organizers, the race organization, and the circuit’s medical and emergency services, will all now be co-operating with the Police and the MSA, the U.K. official motorsport governing body, to conduct a full investigation. All those involved in the event offer sincere condolences to family and the friends of Denis Welch at this very sad time.”
