Peterson Controls Trans-Am Opener

BOWMANVILLE, Ontario – Doug Peterson started the 2012 Trans-Am Series season on the right foot with a victory at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park Sunday.

Defending series champion Tony Ave jumped out to the lead early in the event, with his teammate Petersen in hot pursuit.

On lap 14 Peterson took over the lead as Ave suffered a flat on his Corvette’s left rear. By lap 23 Peterson was in full control of the race, but a double caution flag on lap 32 for non-race related fire inside the course required outside access to the track.

As a result, officials opted to call the race on lap 34, giving Peterson his first triumph in the SCCA-sanctioned series.

“When Tony’s tire finally went down, I saw him go in deep into three…smoke…and I thought gosh, there must be something wrong,” Peterson said. “He obviously had a problem and I just drove on by then kept looking in my mirror to see who was following me. It’s unfortunate for Tony, but I’m going to take the W.”

Ian Patterson was second behind Peterson, followed by Simon Gregg, Andrew Romocki and David Jans.

In the Trans Am 2 class it was Bob Stretch taking the early lead, but Pete Halsmer was able to overtake him for the lead just before the double caution flag for the fire ended the race.
