Cancer Claims ‘Mrs. Speedway’

LINCOLN, Neb. — Mrs. Speedway, Joyce Smith, has died following a 34-month battle with cancer.

The wife of famed Speedway Motors speed shop operator and former car owner Bill Smith died Sunday. Speedway Motors officials confirmed Mrs. Smith’s death with a twitter post this afternoon.

Mrs. Smith has been at her husband’s side a thousands of motorsports and high-performance events through more than six decades.

In addition to the speed business, Joyce Smith and her husband created the American Museum of Speed, located on the Speedway Motors campus in Lincoln, Neb., in 1992.

In 1952, the same year the Smiths were married, Bill Smith opened Speedway Motors with the assistance of a $300 loan from Joyce. She was by his side throughout the history of the company. The couple raised four sons —Clay, Carson, Craig and Jason. All four are involved in the family business.
