Bean Scores, Young Wears Kenyon Crown

ANDERSON, Ind. — The USSA Mel Kenyon Midget Series race at Anderson Speedway on Saturday night had all the ingredients of a classic car race — a close championship race, a driver coming back from an injury and a challenging race track.

Jessica Bean won the race and Travis Young sewed up the championship.

Bean, who was injured in a crash at Gas City Speedway Sept. 28, received the doctor’s OK to race on Friday, battled balky electronics in qualifying and Young and Dameron Taylor to lead all 30 laps.

Young and Taylor, the two championship protagonists traded punches in each segment of the event. Taylor set fast time in qualifying and Young won his heat, while Taylor finished second in his.

This allowed Young to stretch his point lead to 40 points going into the feature. The math was simple, Taylor had to beat Young by eight spots and lead a lap to take it all.

It wasn’t to be as Young and Taylor started deep in the field following the USSA inversion. It didn’t take the two drivers long to get to race leader Bean.

Bean was on a mission; however, and she would not be denied the win. Young and Taylor followed her across the line in second third.

Spencer Bayston and Cordy Horn filled out the top five in the race.
