BELLEVILLE, Ill. — Looking back on the 2012 running of the National Speed Sport News 66 Mike Phillips Memorial for micro sprints, Chris Andrews still has a hard time believing he captured the $10,000 top prize.

“To be honest with you, I couldn’t have imagined being able to be on top of something like that in a million years,” Andrews said.

Andrews, a 28-year-old native of Tulsa, Okla., all but dominated the 2012 event at Southern Illinois Raceway in Marion, Ill. He won his preliminary feature on Thursday night to lock himself into the Saturday feature. Then he won the eight-lap dash on Saturday to earn the pole for the 40-lap finale, where he led 38 of the 40 laps en route to the biggest payday of his career.

“In the feature we ended up catching some lucky breaks,” Andrews recalled. “Justin Peck pulled a slide job or two on me but I was able to get back under him and take off. Honestly, I thought we still had about half the race to go and then the next thing I knew I saw the white flag. I couldn’t believe I was only a lap away from winning $10,000.

“In only its second year it was so big and it is something that everyone wants to win. It was a huge, huge break for me.”
