Andrews Targeting Phillips Memorial Repeat
Andrews, who drives for Adri and Justin Blevins, will be back this year for the third running of the National Speed Sport News 66 Mike Phillips Memorial to defend his victory. He knows it won’t be easy as more than 100 of the best micro sprint racers from all over the country are expected to invade Belle-Clair Speedway this weekend.
“A lot of it is luck. You get a group of guys together that are as good as the ones (event promoter) Brad McDaniel pulls to this race,” Andrews said. “A lot of it is about luck. You obviously can’t start at the back of your heat race and drive through those guys and go win it. You’ve got to have a good draw, you’ve got to get your setup right and just hit your marks.
“I don’t think there is going to be a guy that starts further back than 10th that will be able to come up through there and win it. I think it’ll be a guy who starts in the first three or four rows.”
As big as winning the 2012 edition of the event was, a second-straight victory in the event this year will be that much bigger for Andrews and company.
“I never doubt anything Justin Blevins gives me. He always does a great job on chassis setup and we’re always really good. I always trust the car and he always gives me a car to win,” Andrews said. “It’s also about me putting it in the right areas of the race track and being able to pick the right grooves to run.
“It’s a lot of luck and chassis setup and driving the wheels off the thing.”
The POWRi-sanctioned National Speed Sport News 66 Mike Phillips Memorial for micro sprint cars is July 18-20 at Belle-Clair Speedway in Belleville, Ill. The July 20 finale pays $10,000 to win and $500 to start. For more information on the event, visit www.addiktivepromotions.com.
