Larson Wins In ‘Bit Of A Wild Finish’
TULARE, Calif. — Kyle Larson won Saturday night’s 20th annual Trophy Cup at Thunderbowl Raceway.
Larson started the 50-lap finale to the event, which raised more than $100,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, from 23rd position and steadily worked his way through the field, and was in position to clinch the Trophy Cup title, which pays points per position, before the checkered flag.
But the finish was one for the ages. Larson was closing rapidly on leader Brad Sweet. He slid his Paul Silva No. 57 under Sweet entering the first turn on the final lap of the three-eighths-mile oval only have Sweet cross under him and regain the lead heading down the backstretch.
Larson tried it on the highside exiting the fourth turn and the two cars made contact with Sweet flipping and Larson banging off the outside wall before limping across the finish line with the feature victory and the Trophy Cup title.
“Finally got me a Trophy Cup win,” Larson tweeted after the race. “Bit of a wild finish, but it was a hell of a race. Thank you to @Paul_Silva57 and rest of team.”
Roger Crockett finished second ahead of Shane Golobic, Jason Meyers and Jonathan Allard.
