Weller Wires URC Sprints Field At Delaware
DELMAR, Del. – Josh Weller was the big winner of the 25 lap Bar’s Leaks Labor Day Weekend Championship presented by Pioneer Pole Buildings Saturday night at the Delaware Int’l Speedway.
Weller, driving the Eldreth Construction sprinter led the entire twenty-five distance to pick-up the $3,000 first place prize. Runner-up and current Rislone URC Sprint Series point leader, Davie Franek, made several challenges for the lead but Weller used slower traffic to his advantage to hold off the closing Franek.
In the 25 lap feature event, Weller and Franek brought the field down to take the green flag with Weller going to the front of the pack immediately. By lap five, Weller had established a solid lead over Franek who was followed by Andy Best, Jason Clauss and Curt Michael. Robbie Stillwaggon, involved in a heat race mix-up, was working his way to the front after starting ninth in the feature.
The race continued non-stop and at the halfway point of the race, Weller maintained his commanding lead over Franek, Best, Clauss and Michael.
Things began to get very interesting by lap sixteen as Franek began to reel in Weller.
Franek again placed himself in a position to take a run for the lead but still another lapped car came into the picture. Weller timed the move to perfection, leaving Franek to deal with the slower car. For the final two laps, Weller had a clear track and certainly put that to good use, expanding his lead to about six car lengths over Franek with the checker flag waiving. Andy Best finished a strong third place finish with Curt Michael passing Jason Clauss to take fourth place on the final lap.
