PERRIS, Calif. – Jerry Coons Jr. will look for a solid performance in Thursday’s 72nd annual Turkey Night Grand Prix at Perris Auto Speedway to wrap up his second career National Midget Driver of the Year Championship.

Coons, the 2007 NMDOTY Champion, holds a 45-point lead over Darren Hagen with two-time NMDOTY Champion Brad Kuhn trailing by 58 points in third. A total of 160 points are available in midget racing’s 177th and final event of the 2012 season.

A variety of point possibilities exist for all three drivers route to the title (see below table). For Hagen and Kuhn to have a chance to overtake Coons: Hagen must finish at least tenth place or higher, while Kuhn needs a minimum of a fifth place finish.

Coons has turned in solid performances in midget racing’s Crown Jewel events this year, including a victory in the Belleville Midget Nationals, third at the Pepsi Midget Nationals, sixth at Hut Hundred and eighth in the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl.

The top 10 drivers and top three car owners along with Manufacturers Champions and Rookie of the Year will receive their point fund checks and trophies in the annual ceremony held during the final night of the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Midget Nationals on Jan. 12, 2013.
