Emotional Stockon Earns First USAC Victory
LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. — On a perfect night, young Chase Stockon wired Lawrenceburg Speedway for 30 laps and captured his first USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car Series victory Saturday.
The $10,000-to-win Fall Nationals was co-sanctioned by MSCS. Chris Windom claimed second, ahead of Damion Gardner, Bryan Clauson and Hunter Schuerenberg.
As the pit lane celebration began, Stockon was at a loss for words. Just weeks after the loss of his mother, his biggest supporter, it was an emotional win.
Then he explained, “We’ve been knocking on the door a few times this year and we can’t really pinpoint what we can do better to get us to the front, to pass two more cars. And I think all the stars were aligned tonight and everything just had to be perfect. And tonight was our perfect night. We’re more than tickled to death to finally get our first national win.”
Starting outside the front row, Stockon took the lead before the first turn and didn’t look back. The family’s Ovarian Cancer Awareness Maxim quickly a straightaway advantage over Windom, Gardner and Clauson.
As the leaders began to lap slower cars, a lap-13 caution tightened the field again. On a track that was tacky and fast, Stockon quickly reestablished his advantage. When he got into traffic again, Windom closed the gap to ten car lengths, but biked wickedly in turn three before saving the car without losing a position. At the checkered flag, Stockon held a half straightaway lead.
“I started to get held up in traffic real bad,” Stockon admitted. “But the way the track looked down in one and two I knew that nobody was really up above where we were at. We had a pretty good line down in three and four so it was going to be hard to pass us. It was one of those things where if I got stuck behind a lapped car and had someone coming up on me they’d be gone before you know it. I just kept getting into three and four as hard as I could and then waiting for the lapped car to mess up in one and two.”
“We’d have liked to have won the race,” Windom noted as the TSR GM Performance Maxim was being loaded. “I can’t complain about second. I ran Chase down twice, the first time in lapped traffic and the yellow came out. The second time, I hit a rut and lost all my track that I’d gained on him. That killed all of my momentum. That was pretty much the race because we didn’t have a yellow again after that.”
