George Zarounian Dead At 93

Longtime California open-wheel car owner George Zarounian died Jan. 3. He was 93.
Zarounian, of Visalia, Calif., owned cars that competed primarily in USAC-sanctioned events.

He also operated Zarounian Cadillac/Oldsmobile/Isuzu for 44 years. Zarounian Motorsports, which includes George’s son Gary, has 15 career USAC Silver Crown victories and 11 wins in USAC national midget competition.

Sleepy Tripp notched more than 80 Western and national midget wins for the Zarounians between 1983 and 1993.

The last Zarounian Silver Crown victory came with Bud Kaeding at Tulsa in 2003. Other drivers to win for the Zarounians have included Donnie Beechler, J.J. Yeley and Kasey Kahne.
