It’s Thomas Again In USAC Sprints

Ballou led Thomas as they began working through lapped traffic. Then, following another caution and restart, Ballou bobbled coming through turn three, the No. 5 Baldwin Brothers machine hopping over the cushion. Thomas quickly ducked to the inside and regained the lead. He quickly built a half-straightaway advantage that he was able to maintain to the checkers.

“It was getting pretty ledgy up there,” Thomas explained afterward. “If you hit it just wrong, the front end would get thrown up over it, and it’s hard to get out of it. He just hit it wrong at the right place at the right time and we were able to get by him. We had a good corner and didn’t mess up with him.”

Coming into the event, Stockon was tied with Hunter Schuerenberg for the USAC sprint series point lead. His third-place run from the 11th starting position gave Stockon a 22-point lead as Darland moved up to second and Schuerenberg slipped to third in the standings. Driving his own car, five-time USAC champion Levi Jones raced to sixth after restarting on the tail when he pitted to change a flat tire under caution.
