CLERMONT, Ind. — Kody Swanson made a triumphant return to victory lane Thursday night at Lucas Oil Raceway.
Swanson capped the three-race evening during the opening night of Kroger SpeedFest at the .686-mile oval by winning the J.D. Byrider 100 Traxxas USAC Silver Crown Series race.
Swanson, who missed more than a month of racing after being injured in a midget car crash at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track, took the lead from defending series champion Levi Jones on lap 20 and led the remainder of the 100-lap event.
Swanson had to hold off series veteran Tracy Hines, who was the fast-qualifier for the 30-car field, during the closing laps.
“At one point I didn’t know if I was going to race again and to be able to come back a full month early and return full time and be able to end up in victory lane is very promising for me I’m very excited to do that,” said Swanson. “I wanted to end up in victory lane twice but we didn’t have it in the midget tonight but I can’t be thankful enough for Wilke-Pak Motorsports and Team 6R Racing for giving me the time I needed to heal and bring me out to test and back up to speed and trust me to drive their race car.”
Hines finished second, with Swanson’s brother Tanner third. Jones and Bobby Santos III completed the top five.
Tanner Swanson and Jerry Coons, Jr., who finished seventh, are tied atop the Silver Crown points with 201 markers each.
