AKRON, Ohio — Tires were the talk of the town during the recent Knoxville Nationals and it was apparent Goodyear’s departure from the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series — and perhaps all of winged sprint car racing — was imminent.

Tuesday the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and the World Racing Group announced Goodyear will not continue as the official tire supplier of the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series beyond the 2012 season, ending a three-year relationship.

“For three years, Goodyear’s high quality tires have helped to maintain the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series as the most exciting and competitive series on dirt. We wish the World of Outlaws continued success in the future,” said Justin Fantozzi, marketing manager for Goodyear Racing.

“Goodyear has been a tremendous supporter of sprint car racing both financially and in terms of product development,” said Ben Geisler, chief marketing officer for the World of Outlaws. “After three great seasons, though, we have both decided that it is in our best interest to pursue other opportunities for the 2013 season and beyond.”

Goodyear and the World Racing Group entered into a multi-year agreement in late 2009 that made Goodyear the official tire supplier of the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series.

Rumors ran rampant at Knoxville as to what company may take over as supplier for the series, or whether sprint car racing’s highest profile series may return to an open tire rule. Only time will tell.
