Jason Meyers To Try To Win Knoxville

Jason Meyers

CLOVIS, Calif. — Two-time World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion Jason Meyers will be returning to sprint car racing in an effort to accomplish the one goal that has eluded him — win the Knoxville Nationals.

Meyers will drive the No. 21 entered by Tom Tarlton and Tarlton, Inc. in both the 360 and 410 Knoxville Nationals.

“When we decided to retire from the sport last year, we had talked to the Tarlton family here in town,” Meyers told National Speed Sport News by phone. “They are really good friends of ours, and we always had an interest in going back to Knoxville.

“We put a deal together where they purchased a good part of our equipment with the intent that they would take that and use it for their racing operation, but as part of that they wanted to go back to Knoxville with me driving it. We have been working on this really since we walked away and now that time is here.”

Meyers, who won two straight World of Outlaws titles, but stepped out of the car in March to pursue family and business interests, has a best Knoxville Nationals finish of second in 2008.

“For me the really exciting thing when we put all this together was I can sit here say that I achieved everything that I ever wanted to achieve in sprint car racing, short of winning the Knoxville Nationals,” Meyers said. “This is an opportunity for me. I have been out of the car a couple of months, but not that long. I’ve kept in shape.”

Meyers will race once in California before heading to Iowa for the 360 Nationals Aug. 2-4 and the 52nd Goodyear Knoxville Nationals Aug. 8-11.

“We’re going to run a warm-up show at home and then go out and run the 360 races, too, just to get my hand-eye coordination up to speed,” Meyers said laughing. “Your hand-eye coordination is a little different sitting at home looking at a computer screen than it is in the race car.”

But can he win?

“Absolutely,” Meyers said. “That is the only reason we are going.”

A full-length feature on Meyers’ return to racing will be included in the August issue of SPEED SPORT Magazine.
