CONCORD, N.C. — Shortly after the stroke of midnight, Paul McMahan raced out of a cloud of dust and took the checkered flag to win Friday night’s Circle K/NOS Energy Showdown for the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series at The Dirt Track at Charlotte.

McMahan started fifth on a night when track officials battled dust throughout the night, creating several long delays to rework the racing surface of the four-tenths-mile dirt track.

With unseasonably cool temperatures, less than half the handsome crowd of more than 10,000, had called it a night when McMahan powered under point leader and polesitter Daryn Pittman to grab the lead on lap 17.

McMahan held off Pittman through the final 13 laps and picked up his second WoO victory of the season driving for Chad and Jen Clemens.

“He (Chad Clemens) got on my ass last week about not winning races and hopefully this gets him off my ass for a while,” said McMahan.

The bottom side of the track was where McMahan got his work done.

“My car was working very well on the bottom of the track tonight,” he said. “Barry Jackson gave me a heck of race car tonight.”

Pittman finished second in the Kasey Kahne Racing No. 9 with Kyle Larson taking third after restarting sixth with five laps remaining.

Three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart beat his Tony Stewart Racing teammate Steve Kinser to the finish for fourth place.

Logan Schuchart was the fast qualifier for the 28-car field.

Ryan Atkins won the NDRA late model race.
