Pittman Takes Momentum To Knoxville Finale
KNOXVILLE, Iowa — Kasey Kahne Racing drivers Daryn Pittman, Brad Sweet and Cody Darrah had won a combined 18 World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series features entering the 54th annual FVP Knoxville Nationals, the team wasn’t satisfied with its position entering the final day of competition at the year’s biggest race.
Thus, a team meeting was held on Friday night at Knoxville Raceway to reassess the team’s strategy and Pittman came out strong and romped to an impressive victory in the SPEED SPORT World Challenge.
“We realized that all three of our cars looked the same and aren’t good enough to win right now,” Pittman explained. ‘Last year we went into Saturday with Brad and I up front and Cody was a little farther back, but we were really happy with where are cars were going into the A main on Saturday night and thought we could really contend for it.
“This year we just haven’t been in the same spot,” said Pittman, who will start 17th in tonight’s feature. “We needed to make a new plan. Last year we were good enough that we were afraid to try anything or change anything. This year, we were all bad enough that it was a good idea to try something different.”
Darrah will share row nine with Pittman tonight, while Sweet, who won the World of Outlaws feature at Knoxville earlier this year, will start his evening 11th in the B main.
Pittman, the defending series champion has won 11 features this season. Winning from deep in the field can be done as demonstrated by seven-time Nationals winner Donny Schatz, who came from 23rd starting spot to win last year’s Nationals after transferring through the B main.
