Schatz Scores From 11th At Volusia
BARBERVILLE, Fla. — Donny Schatz gave the full house at Saturday night’s WoO STP Sprints program at Volusia Speedway Park their money’s worth with a brilliant charge from 11th to the lead, shooting down the lead-swapping duo of Cody Darrah and defending series champion Daryn Pittman in the process.
“That was a lot of fun,” said the beaming Schatz. “We weren’t the greatest last night, but we kept working on the car and every time we got on the track, it was better. This was the first time the track has slowed down a little and you could try different lines for a change. With all that rain last week, it’s been really fast until tonight.”
Fast-timer Paul McMahan, Terry McCarl, Friday winner Brad Sweet, Steve Kinser, Joey Saldana, Sammy Swindell and Kerry Madsen rounded out the top 10.
Pittman’s Dash win put him on the pole for the feature and he edged away from teammate Darrah in the early going. But with Pittman edging higher and higher each lap, Darrah was working inside him when the only yellow flew on lap 12 for a spin by Rico Abreau.
Schatz had already blasted to sixth and when the green flew, he immediately shot by Saldana and McCarl and drew in on the third running McMahan, who he would put away with an outside pass off turn two on lap 17.
Darrah had sneaked under Pittman in the meantime, with the two dueling until lap 22, when Schatz drove under Pittman as they hit turn three. He repeated the move on Darrah at the other end of the half-mile and drove off to his first win of 2014.
“I was surprised,” declared Darrah. “I was worried about holding Daryn off, but I never expected Donny to get in there.”
“We’ve got to figure out how to win,” offered a dejected Pittman. “It’s not good, getting the lead and then backing up to third. I wasn’t surprised that Cody passed me but I didn’t expect him to get me where he did. But both Cody and Donny were really fast tonight.”
