WINCHESTER, Ind. – Alex Bowman came alive after a late-race pit stop for four tires, wheeling his Dodge to victory during Sunday’s ARCA Racing Series Herr’s Chase the Taste 200 at Winchester Speedway.
Bowman lurked behind Venturini Motorsports drivers Brennan Poole and Erik Jones for much of the race, but a late caution flag shuffled the deck at the half-mile asphalt oval.
When the field came down pit road for pit stops Jared Marks and Josh Williams came out as the leaders after taking two tires. Bowman was the first car in line who took four tires.
“We were so evenly matched with the 25 (Poole) that I kept trying to get around him,” Bowman said. “I got somewhere around him one time when the caution came out. From there, their guys beat us off pit road, but our guys made up for it with that four-tire pit stop.”
On the restart Bowman shot by both Marks and Williams as Poole gave chase. Poole closed on Bowman with 10 laps left but then Bowman slowly pulled away.
Just as Bowman took the white flag Poole lost a tire on his Chevrolet, allowing Bowman to beat him to the finish by more than six seconds.
Poole managed to hang on and finish second after leading 71 laps. Jones, who led 41 laps, ended up third. Polesitter Chris Buescher and Matt Lofton completed the top five.
