Santos Enters Budweiser 200 At Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Former NASCAR Whelen Modified Series champion and open-wheel driving veteran Bobby Santos has entered Oswego Speedway’s 58th annual Budweiser International Classic 200 for Novelis Supermodifieds on Aug. 31.

Santos, who claimed the 2010 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship, enters the Budweiser International Classic as the driver of the Mike Barbera Racing, Muldoon chassis, Top Quality Construction No. 45 machine.

Santos last competed in the richest and most prestigious Supermodified race in the world back in 2010, driving in the Budweiser International Classic for Mike Muldoon, the builder of the Supermodified in which Santos will compete in this Labor Day weekend.

After starting from the 14th position, Santos battled for an International Classic win in ’10 before running out of fuel in the Muldoon No. 05. Santos did however battle back for a 10th place finish.

Looking to make his seventh career start in the Budweiser International Classic, Santos has a career best finish of second coming in 2004 driving for car owner Craig Rayvals, once again behind the wheel of a Muldoon chassis.

That same season Santos won the winged Bud Light ISMA Super Nationals during Budweiser International Classic Weekend, falling just short of becoming the only driver to win both the Saturday ISMA Supermodified main and Sunday’s non-winged International Classic in the same weekend.

Santos has kept busy in 2014, making seven starts on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour so far this season with three victories coming at Stafford Motor Speedway, Waterford Speedbowl, and New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Driving the Tinio Racing No. 44 Modified, Santos rides third in the current NASCAR standings with a total of four top five finishes trailing only Doug Coby and Justin Bonsignore.

While running Modifieds, Santos has also spent time in the USAC ranks during the ’14 season.

Santos drove to victory in USAC Silver Crown action back in June at Gateway Motorsports Park in Madison, IL driving the Fred Gormly owned RPM Enterprises No. 98, topping USAC veterans Tracy Hines, Bobby East, Caleb Armstrong, and Kody Swanson.

Just last month Santos cracked another USAC top five with a fifth place finish in the Rich Vogler Classic at Lucas Oil Raceway Park in Clermont, IN, again in the Gormly entry, behind David Byrne, Tanner Swanson, Kody Swanson, and NASCAR star Ryan Newman.

For the season Santos rides eighth in overall USAC Silver Crown standings, despite not competing in the dirt track events on the schedule.

The Budweiser International Classic will not be Santos’ official return to Supermodified racing however, as Santos competed in the first leg of the Supermodified Triple Crown at Ohio’s Sandusky Speedway in the 38th annual Hy-Miler Supermodified Nationals on July 26, where he finished eighth.

Through his career Santos has started the Supermodified International Classic at Oswego for car owners Dave Lair, Rayvals, Howie Lane, John Nicotra, and Muldoon. Barbera, a fresh face on the scene of Supermodified racing, will look to become the sixth different owner to field an entry for Santos in the 200.
