Brian Campbell Picks The Roses In Indiana

SCHERERVILLE, Ind. — The out-of-towner beat the local favorites on their home turf as Michigan’s Brian Campbell captured the Derby Run for the Roses 100 ASA Late Model Series event at Illiana Motor Speedway Saturday night.

Campbell, the event’s fast qualifier, pushed his Ford Fusion into the lead on lap 28 after starting 10th in the 18-car field. Campbell seemed to have the field covered with the exception of local racer Anthony Danta, who stayed close most of the race.

Campbell crossed the finish line with a .772-second advantage over Danta, who was trailed by another area favorite, Eddie Hoffman. Ohio native Robbie Pyle, who was the race leader for laps 11 through 27, finished fourth with Canadian Jordon Sims taking fifth.

Losing control of his car for an instant, Campbell almost opened the door for Danta to grab the lead after a restart after with 59 laps complete.

“It happened to me in practice,” Campbell said. “For whatever reason, I go over a big bump in (turn) one wrong, too hard, too high. I haven’t figured it out yet. I did it again (during the race) and it jacked the car all up. Thankfully, I didn’t wreck the whole field.”

Commenting about his chance for the lead, Danta said, “It looked like he (Campbell) got sideways. I got there, but I didn’t want to force the issue. It was still kind of early. I didn’t want to knock the nose (of my car) off. There wasn’t a lot of room. He has always run me clean, so I figured I would race him the same way. We were just equal. I didn’t have enough to get him.”

The finish:
Brian Campbell, Anthony Danta, Eddie Hoffman, Robbie Pyle, Jordon Sims, Jesse Saunders, Blake Brown, Erik Jones, Trevor Dassow, Wes Griffith, Josh Nelms, Seith Moody, Brad Plunkett, Ross Zumbach, Thomas Woodin, Tanner Bohlen, Jared Marks, Jim Duchow.
