Larson Wins In First Late Model Start
NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — Coming off a memorable season of open-wheel sprint-car and midget racing, Californian Kyle Larson made his first asphalt late model start in Saturday’s Pete Orr Memorial at New Smyrna Speedway.
Larson made a daring pass of Ben Kennedy, son of International Speedway Corp. Chairman Lesa Kennedy and grandson of the late Bill France, Jr., to win the 100-lap event on the half-mile race track.
While Larson celebrated in victory lane with his Tim Russell Driver Development team, Kennedy was disqualified for having too much left-side weight in his late model.
As a result, Rich Clouser finished second, with fast-qualifier Stephen Nasse, David Rogers and Anthony Sergi completing the top five.
