Riddle Speeds To Oktoberfest Glory
WEST SALEM, Wis. — Zach Riddle had a fast car and he wasn’t afraid to show it on day three of the 43rd annual Oktoberfest Race Weekend at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway.
Riddle was the class of the field in the Big 8 Series all day long as he set a new track record in qualifying and then blew away the competition in the 68-lap feature event.
James Swan won the Mid-American Series feature while Brett Wenzel won the Outlawz main event. Nick Cina Jr. won the first American Short Tracker feature event.
Riddle didn’t waste any time working his way to the top spot. He started ninth and was up to fifth by lap six. Ahead of him, Jeremy Miller was got past early leader Austin Nason lap eight to the lead. Riddle wasn’t far behind as he followed Miller to take over the second spot.
Riddle went on the inside of Miller going into turn three on lap 14 and came back to the start/finish line as the new leader. Riddle opened up to a huge lead until the first caution flew on lap 35 when Mike Ehde and Cory Kemkes got together on the frontstretch and went into the turn one wall.
On the restart, Riddle took off from Miller and was on a Saturday night cruise all the way to the finish line. Miller’s second place finish secured his fourth Big 8 Series championship. Nason would get on the podium with a third place finish.
James Swan capped off his Oktoberfest Race Weekend by winning his second feature event in two nights as he won the Mid-American Series 40-lap feature event. Jeremy Spoonmore was second with Jack Stern in third. Spoonmore’s second place finish was enough to become the 2012 champion.
Brad Keith won the Mid-American Shootout and took home an extra $1,000.
Brett Wenzel was quick to get the lead in the Outlawz 15-lap feature event. Wenzel got around Jason Bolster on lap six but was challenged in the late stages by Jerry Aylsworth for the lead until Aylsworth spun in turn one on the last lap, allowing Wenzel to cruise to the win.
Nick Cina Jr. held off a late charge from Dave Auringer to win the 15-lap American Short Tracker feature event. Cina got past Seth Reamer on lap six and held off a last lap challenge from Auringer to get the big win in the caution-free event.
Chris Wimmer held off Cardell Potter to win the Top-16 race for the ASA Midwest Tour. Wimmer will start on the pole with Potter alongside him for Sunday’s Oktoberfest 100 main event. Collin Reffner won the qualifier race over Chris Weinkauf. These two along with Griffin McGrath, Tim Rothe, Tim Schendel, and Erik Darnell advance to tomorrow’s feature.
