Gresham Sets World Crown 300 Date

JEFFERSON, Ga. – One of the most prestigious short-track stock car races in the country – the World Crown 300 – will anchor the 2014 half-mile racing schedule at Gresham Motorsports Park.

The 31st-Annual World Crown 300 – originally contested in 1983 – has been scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014.

This year’s World Crown 300 schedule will feature multiple divisions of racing with Saturday’s World Crown 300-lap super late model ‘King of the Short Tracks’ battle the headline event. The 2014 World Crown 300 will be a Southern Super Series championship point’s event and is sure to attract a host of drivers and cars from all over the country.

“The World Crown 300 has always been a great event and we’re looking forward to continuing that tradition in 2014,” said John Close, GMP general manager. “You could create a pretty good stock car racing short-track Hall of Fame with all of the drivers who have won the World Crown 300. And, the list of all-time great short-track racers who haven’t won the Crown is even longer. It’s extremely tough to win the World Crown 300 and capturing it is a career highlight for any driver.”

The storied history of the World Crown 300 at GMP began on Nov. 27, 1983 when an all-star starting lineup including Jody Ridley, Mark Martin, Freddy Fryar, Darrell Waltrip, Alan Kulwicki, Rusty Wallace, Bob Senneker, Mike Alexander and the ‘Alabama Gang’ – Neil Bonnett, Bobby, Donnie and Davey Allison – battled on the Jefferson, Ga., half-mile.

Wisconsin short-track legend Dick Trickle bested them all taking home the first-place trophy in the inaugural 1983 event. Since then Waltrip, Mike Eddy, Rich Bickle, Rick Crawford, Paul Kelley, Jimmy Garmon, Freddy Querry, Chris Wimmer, Ronnie Sanders, Justin Wakefield and 2013 champion Preston Peltier are among those who have taken home the title of ‘King of the Short Tracks.’
