Kostecki Is Unlikely Rockingham Winner
ROCKINGHAM, N.C. — Australian Brodie Kostecki pulled away from the field late to score his first UARA-STARS Late Model Series triumph Saturday afternoon at Rockingham Speedway.
Multi-time Rockingham race winner Clay Rogers started on the pole and led the first 37 laps of the event before giving up the lead to NASCAR Camping World Truck Series regular Ty Dillon on lap 38. Dillon quickly fell into a battle with Ronnie Bassett Jr. for the lead, with Bassett hounding Dillon for several laps.
Bassett made his move for the lead on lap 52, looking under Dillon as the pair raced out of turn two. Going down the backstretch a lapped car made things interesting, causing Dillon and Bassett to make contact. Bassett had to back off the gas to regain his composure, allowing Kostecki to blow past him and into second.
Kostecki took a look under Dillon for the lead on lap 54, but the second and final caution flag of the day waved before he could complete the pass. The field returned to racing on lap 60 with Dillon out front, but it didn’t stay that way long. Kostecki restarted alongside Dillon and within one lap had taken the lead away.
Once out front, Kostecki hit the afterburners and pulled away from Dillon and the rest of the field. He cruised to his first series victory, beating second-place finisher Ben Rhodes by a comfortable margin.
“I started off the race just kind of riding around behind Clay, just conserving my equipment,” Kostecki said. “As soon as I got by Ty I knew I could pull (away from) the field.”
Following Kostecki and Rhodes at the finish were Bassett, Dillon and Rogers.
